You
are much more likely to need some form of vision correction
as you get older. Many people find they need glasses
for reading from their mid-40s onwards; and nearly everyone
will require spectacles by the time they are 65.
But age can affect your sight in more serious ways. In later
life you are more likely to experience a medical problem with
your vision. Glaucoma is much more common in those over 40,
while macular degeneration mainly occurs in people over 60.
Loss of sight can result from these conditions and early detection
is important.
Whatever your age, it's important to have regular eye examinations.
This is especially true if your elderly, which is why the NHS
provides free eye tests for everyone aged 60 or over. You may
also qualify for help with your glasses, so please ask for further
